INCLUSION, INTEGRATION AND TRANSFORMATION: SOCIAL PROTECTION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN THE SADC – SASPEN Annual Conference 2017

The SASPEN Annual International Conference 2017 themed Inclusion, Integration and Transformation: Social Protection for Persons with Disabilities in the SADC took place at Protea Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on May 3-4, 2017.

The following were the conference sub-themes:

  1. Social Protection Programmes for Persons with Disabilities;
  2. Mainstreaming Disability in Social Protection Policy; and
  3. Occupational Health and Safety, Employment Injury Insurance and Return to Work.

Altogether, 28 podium and 3 poster presentations were made. Overall, 17 countries were represented.

The conference was officially opened by Ms. Charlotte V. McClain-Nhlapo, Global Disability Advisor, The World Bank Group. Three poster presentations opened the discussions up for the keynote speeches that set the scene for the rest of the conference. In total, 3 keynote speeches set the pace for the very interesting presentations and engaged discussions that characterized the event. Keynote addresses were given by:

Professor Marius Olivier, Institute for Social Law and Policy

Ms. Renata Nowak-Garmer, United Nations Development Programme and Regional Service Center Addis Ababa
